I have been performing and recording original music since the age of 16. As a drummer and background vocalist for numerous bands, I’ve toured the US extensively and have collaborated as musician and recording engineer on countless recordings and music projects. As founding members of the mid-90s emo scene we toured with and performed alongside the likes of Jimmy Eat World, The Promise Ring, Texas is the Reason, Mineral, Boys Life, The Get Up Kids, The Appleseed Cast, Cursive, Braid, Hot Water Music, Panes Mistaken for Stars, and The Gloria Record just to name drop a few. In July of 2008 my former band, Christie Front Drive, was extolled as one of the most influential punk bands by Alternative Press magazine.
There is also a donut named after us. Yes, a donut. Distinguished drummer and record producer Mark Trombino opened a vegan donut shop in LA, Donut Friend, where all the donuts are named after rock bands. You can enjoy a Bacon 182, Green Teagan and Sara, Fudgegazi, Nutellavision or Custard Front Drive.
Near the beginning of Covid-19 I was invited to be one of the original 6 members of the Indie Drummer Collective (#IndieDrummerCollective @indiedrummercollective) a rotating cast of drummers who all come together to percussively honor a band/drummer(s) or a musical theme through drum cover videos on social media. As of now the collective has 80+ members from some very prominent bands/acts.
Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, I spent most of my youth skateboarding, snowboarding and listening to punk records. In between touring and working odd jobs I was able to earn a bachelor of science in music with emphasis in audio engineering from the University of Colorado at Denver because I figured working as a recording engineer would give me something fun to do when we weren’t on the road.
Before leaving the powdery slopes of snowy Colorado for way-to-hot Arizona, I worked as a recording engineer at Pet Sounds Recording Studio with Robert Schneider tracking and mixing releases for the Elephant 6 Recording Company, including The Apples In Stereo albums Her Wallpaper Reverie, The Discovery Of A World Inside The Moone and Electronic Projects for Musicians. Though it was recorded by Robert at our studio I missed out on contributing to the iconic Neutral Milk Hotel album In The Aeroplane Over the Sea because I was on tour at the time. Oops.
Upon moving to Arizona, I broadened my engineering expertise producing radio and television advertising spots as well as recording primary & post-production sound for film and video. I’ve also spent some time scrutinizing evidentiary recordings as an audio forensics analyst. Never willing to give up recording music, however, I worked for several years as a staff engineer at the Gray Room Recording Studio in Glendale, and currently work as a freelance engineer around the Valley.
I started adjunct teaching at Mesa Community College in 2005 as a way to supplement my income and ended up becoming the director of the Music Industry Studies program at Scottsdale Community College in 2009. I love sharing my experience and enthusiasm for audio and benevolent disdain the music industry with my students. In addition to teaching, I continue to work in the industry as an engineer, record producer and musician. I am a husband and devoted father of two amazing boys.
